The energy sector, traditionally viewed as conservative and slow to evolve, is now being redefined by data, artificial intelligence, digitalisation. A great example of this transformation is PPC Group, whose journey from a legacy utility to a modern PowerTech company is setting new standards for how energy and technology can work together to shape a cleaner, smarter future.
PPC Group’s ambition to become a leading European PowerTech company is more than a vision—it’s a concrete, group-wide transformation that touches every aspect of its operations. In Romania, digitalization has become a strategic cornerstone. From smart grid automation to AI-powered energy forecasting, the PPC companies in Romania are investing in technologies that bring efficiency, transparency to their customers and the energy infrastructure.
For example, smart grid systems now allow teams to identify and resolve network faults remotely—tasks that once required technicians to travel long distances to diagnose issues manually. Today, with SCADA systems and real-time monitoring platforms, much of this process is just a click away. This shift not only increases operational efficiency but also ensures faster and more reliable service for millions of customers.
The PowerTech transformation also extends to how PPC interacts with its customers. Energy consumers now expect the same seamless, digital-first experiences they get from any modern service provider. To meet these expectations, PPC Romania is introducing AI-driven platforms, virtual assistants, and voice bots that allow users to access personalized information instantly. Whether managing consumption, paying bills, or receiving proactive support, customers are engaging with energy in ways that are more intuitive and human-centered than ever before.
Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in PPC’s digital strategy. Across the Group, AI is being deployed to to optimize energy systems, reduce CO₂ emissions, and support the transition to a greener and more digital energy future. Projects like Olympus AI, launched in Greece, represent a pioneering effort in leveraging artificial intelligence for energy management and innovation. PPC’s integrated AI framework ensures that innovation is embedded throughout the entire energy value chain.
One of the most ambitious demonstrations of PPC Group’s PowerTech evolution is the Western Macedonia transformation project in Greece. Once a hub for lignite-based energy, the region is being reborn as a European center for clean energy and high-tech infrastructure.
At the core of this €5.75 billion roadmap is the development of a robust green energy ecosystem that will power one of Europe's largest data centers, a 300MW hyperscale facility scalable up to 1,000MW, to be built on PPC-owned land with existing grid and cooling infrastructure. This project represents a shift in how energy is being produced and consumed.
This initiative represents a model for how energy and technology can coexist to create self-sustaining ecosystems that attract both hyperscalers and innovators from across industries.
PPC’s transformation proves that the energy industry is no longer defined by legacy systems, but by innovation and agility. As the company continues to integrate smart grids, digital platforms, AI, digital platforms and clean energy forecasting, it is helping redefine what it means to power a modern society.
